Drive across the Serra da Estrela mountain range, experience amazing climbs and decents - navigate one of Portugal's most hair raising roads, it drops nearly straight to Mantegias, covering some 4km of linear distance on 17km of twisting roads with vertical drops on either side, with no barriers. See the shepherds tending their flocks. It is great - our favourite drive!
Serra da Estrela

The scenery surrounding our Quinta is part of the foothills of the Serra do Açor and the Serra da Estrela. You can explore small mountain roads leading to ancient stone villages perched on hilltops or nestling in steep valleys, some of which have hardly changed in centuries.

The Açor Mountain is an area mainly dominated by the schist with round shaped mountain tops and slopes and where the water streams plough down to the valleys like the Fraga da Pena (a waterfall).

Other sights particular to the area include donkey carts, loaded with firewood or vegetables and fruit, a shepherd who walks in front of your car with a herd of sheep; women who carry bags, buckets or baskets on their heads. Small villages with white houses and bright red tiles, often very simple or even poor, but often containing beautiful granite or slate houses, many restored with care.
